　　But a war began. Bombs fell from the sky and scattered our lives like leaves in a storm.

　　然而，戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)爆發(fā)了。炮彈從天而降，我們像風(fēng)暴中的樹(shù)葉一樣，四處逃難。

　　When the war ended， there was nothing left of the city and of the house where my grandparents had lived.

　　戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)結(jié)束后，城市變?yōu)榱藦U墟，外公家的房子也被夷為平地。

　　So they returned to the village where they had been children. But my grandfather never kept another songbird.

　　就這樣，他們回到了童年時(shí)候的村子，而我的外公再?zèng)]有養(yǎng)過(guò)會(huì)唱歌的鳥(niǎo)兒。

　　The last time I saw him， my grandfather said that he longed to see California one more time.  He never did.

　　我最后一次見(jiàn)到外公的時(shí)候，他對(duì)我說(shuō)，他想再回加州看一看。然而，他終究沒(méi)有去成。

　　And when I was nearly grown， I left home and went to see California for myself.

　　長(zhǎng)大之后，我離開(kāi)家，來(lái)到了加州。

　　After a time， I came to love the land my grandfather had loved， and I stayed on and on until I had a daughter of my own.

　　漸漸地，我也愛(ài)上了外公深?lèi)?ài)過(guò)的這片土地，在這里留了下來(lái)，并且有了自己的女兒。

　　But I also miss the mountains and rivers of my childhood. I miss my old friends. So I return now and then， when I cannot， still the longing in my heart.

　　然而，我也會(huì)懷念故鄉(xiāng)的山川，懷念故鄉(xiāng)的朋友，所以我偶爾也會(huì)回去。即使無(wú)法回去，心中的思念仍不間斷。

　　The funny thing is， the moment I am in one country， I am homesick for the other.

　　有趣的是，每當(dāng)我來(lái)到其中的一個(gè)國(guó)家時(shí)，我就會(huì)思念另一個(gè)國(guó)家。

　　I think I know my grandfather now.

　　I miss him very much.

　　我想，我現(xiàn)在懂了我的外公。我非常想念他。
